I have been at C.I.S.S since the beginning of October. Online it says it's a nonprofit, but when you hear of a non profit you think of kindness, you think of compassion and respect and understanding. Especially when most of the homeless people are at the lowest point in their lives. However that is not how the staff members treat us. They treat us like we are a turd stuck to the bottom of their shoe. They do group punishment here. If one person does something the staff doesn't like the will punish everyone here. There's close to 200 people here and there's only enough table seats for 120 people. There are two TV rooms that are never open during the day. They are only open at 8pm but they are shut down at ten and turned into sleeping areas. There are only twenty cots so alot of people are forced to sleep on the concrete floor without a mattress or a pillow. I've witnessed firsthand how the staff treat the homeless people that stay at C.I.S.S and it's not good. Out of all the staff members here there are only about 5 that treat us like human beings. The dorms are locked at 7:30 in the morning and they are not opened most days until 4:30 to 5pm, every day even today on thanksgiving they locked the dorms at 730 in the morning and would not open the tv rooms because they say they don't want us to get comfortable here which is such a contridiction to the mission statement they post online. Also for almost two months a toilet was clogged in the west bathroom with urine and feces and instead of fixing it they left it in there for two months to teach us a lesson which is pure evil to treat us like that. When I talked to staff they told me to talk to maintenance. When I talked to the maintenance guy Joe he cussed me out and told me not to talk to him. Since I've been here I've been treated less than humane. Everyone can stay here for 90 days but they say they give 30 Day extensions. They also have forced labor in order to get an extension. Because if you don't volunteer the manager rosa will tell the committee not to give you an extension. The staff will get verbally and physically aggressive with us if we argue back and use profanity they will kick us out for 3 days too two weeks but nothing happens to them when they use profanity. I've witnessed one staff member try to fight multiple different people in separate incidents and nothing happens to him. Another staff member Alaina will scream at us and use profanity at us but nothing happens about it. My question is who holds the staff here accountable because right now they have free rain to treat us however they want to. If you file a grievance they will deny you a 30 Day extension. Rosa the manager screamed at about 150 homeless people because she was tired of people coming up to her and complaining about staff. She said and I qoute "Don't come up to me talking about how my staff are mistreating you. I don't want to hear it. If you have a problem with my staff you need to file a grievance." But if you file a grievance you will be asked to leave after 90 days. The west side showers are infested with knats and two of the showers always flood due to clogging issues. One lady died here a couple months ago from e coli poisoning. She was hauled out on a stretcher by the EMTs. The State of Iowa needs to do a investigation into the way the homeless people are treated by the staff. The State of Iowa should also do a inspection. And the state of Iowa should also conduct a audit because this place never has any money to fix anything. You should think twice before you donate money to the C.I.S.S because majority of the staff act like they hate the homeless people here.

I saw a staff member here beat an old man in a wheelchair for refusing to eat his vegetables, then he went outside and shot a stray dog for barking too loud in the parking lot. He came back in and slapped an old lady for peeing the bed and then broke all the coffee mugs in the kitchen cuz one of the homeless paid staff "missed a spot". He then went in the men's restroom scraped up all the black mold with a razor blade, then chopped it all up and snorted it in one big line. Baddest dude I ever met. #MyIdol

The ciss is phoney always threaten to kick someone out. Kick you out for forgetting to strip your bed. Staff doesn't help you to better yourself. Applied for food stamps after I said no. Worst shelter I've ever been to. Bethel isn't much better but it's better than the ciss

I don't know about the shelter itself, however the clinic attached to the shelter is 10 stars in my opinion. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They are without a doubt sensitive and understanding. If I were in charge, they would all get a raise in salary. They helped my sister in time of need and while I was there I witnessed them helping others and I was in awe! Some of the customers they dealt with were rude and impossible in my opinion, however they remained calm and very patient. I honestly can say that I could not do their job and I doubt that few people could. My hat is off to you, the staff of whom I have the utmost respect. By the way, you saved my sister's life.

Received what appeared to be an actual response from the owner. Sadly enough it disappeared into a generic catch all drop box
